Learn Italian – How to ask for something?

The scenario: Having arrived in Italy, you decide to go to the airport caffe, here’s a few words / phrases which should help you out.

Calabria Coffee Cappucino

Worth Nothing

At a busy bar, where you generally stand at the counter, it’s usual that you go to the cash desk (la cassa) first and place your order, pay for it and get a receipt (uno scontrino). This receipt is then handed to the person making the drinks at the bar.

Greeting someone

Buongiorno – good morning / afternoon Buonasera – good evening (from mid-afternoon)

Listen out for ‘Prego’

(Prego literally means I pray) is used in a number of situations.

In reply to ‘grazie’ (thank you), it means ‘don’t mention it’ or ‘not at all’.
It’s also used to say can I help you?/ please do/ help yourself.
Prego, si accomodi – do sit down.

They may say ‘Dica’?

(pron. Dika) Also meaning what can I do for you?

What would you like? – Desidera? Desiderano? (if addressing more than one person)
E lei? – and for you? Benissimo – certainly.
Subito – right away / Va bene – fine (after you’ve ordered).

You may need to attract attention

(don’t take it personally, the Italians are not the best at orderly queues)

  •  Scusi (pron. Skuzi).

Then, the easiest approach when asking for something is to just name it…

  • Un caffe (you will be served an espresso) e un cappuccino.
  • Un caffe lungo – black coffee with extra water(avoid calling at an Americano).
  • Un caffe doppio – double the amount of strong black coffee.
  • Un caffelatte – mild black coffee with hot milk.
  • Un caffe / cappuccino freddo – cold coffee / cappuccino, refreshing on a hot day!
  • Un Te – tea, ask for it with milk (al latte) or else it will be served – al limone (with a slice of lemon).
  • Zucchero (pron. zukero) – sugar / Una Pasta – pastry.

If you’re struggling and need to point at something you want just say ‘Questo, per favore’

  • Please – per favore / Thank you – Grazie.
  • Uno, due, tre, quattro, cinque (pron. Chinkwe) – one to five.
  • Non-alcoholic aperitif – un bitter analcolico (like the crodino we serve).
  • Glass of – un bicchiere / A bottle of – una bottiglia.
  • di vino rosso / bianco – red / white wine / di acqua minerale – water.
  • di birra (alla spina) – beer (draught) un’aranciata – orange.

Black Forest Gateau by Calabria

Serves 8-12

700g Chocolate

500g Butter

4tbs Cocoa Powder

12tbs Olive Oil

4tbs Baking Powder

12 Egg Yolks

12 Egg Whites

120g Sugar


  • Pre heat oven at 180 C.
  • Melt Chocolate and butter over a bain marie.
  • Mix melted chocolate and butter with cocoa powder, olive oil and baking powder.
  • Once the mix has slightly cooled add the egg yolks.
  • Whisk the egg whites. Slowly adding sugar until stiff peak. Fold into the chocolate mix.
  • Place mixture in a baking tray using baking parchment.
  • Bake for 30-40 mins.
  • Cut into portions to suit.
  • Serve and Enjoy. Dress with Vanilla mascarpone cream, mint leaves, cubes of jelly and fresh cherries.

Chesterfield restaurant makes 2015 Good Food GuideChesterfield’s authentic Italian restaurant, Calabria, has been recognised as a ‘Local Gem’ in the Good Food Guide 2015.

The restaurant will feature in a new ‘Local Gem’ category in the guide, which highlights local eateries that deliver perfect food and overall experience. Entries to the Good Food Guide are based entirely on anonymous expert inspections and reader recommendations.

The guide, published by Waitrose, is the UK’s bestselling and most respected restaurant guide. It has been running since 1951 featuring some of the world’s most famous restaurants, including those owned by Heston Blumenthal, Gordon Ramsay and Michel Roux Jr.

Based on Glumangate, Chesterfield, Calabria Cucina Italiana & Caffè Bar is a well-loved eatery throughout Derbyshire and no stranger to accolades. As well as being shortlisted for two awards at this year’s Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards, the popular eatery is ranked first in restaurants in Chesterfield on Trip Advisor and was voted Best International Restaurant 2014 at the Derbyshire Food & Drink Awards’ and also scooped three awards in 2013 Chesterfield Food & Drink Awards – Best Customer Service, Chef of the Year, and Restaurant of the Year 2013.

We were sat with full view of the kitchen through the serving hatch and could see the care and attention going in to every dish. Good wine list, nice ambience and non-intrusive service – highly recommend, they do a pre-theatre menu too which looked good value.”

Wherever possible, Calabria uses authentic ingredients in its food, many direct from the Risorto family’s roots in Calabria, the southern region of Italy.
